Seven Day Forecasts

Users of the "Current Conditions and Forecasts" section will quickly notice the introduction of several improvements. The primary change is the inclusion of a sixth and seventh day in the forecast period. Other minor adjustments to the web page have been made in response to the ongoing feedback from our users. To summarize, the changes include:

  • Introduction of a sixth and seven day in the forecast.
  • Full text is always available beneath the icons to reduce button clicks.
  • Highlighted temperature values in the icon summary when no high or low temperature is stated where temperatures rise or fall abnormally.
  • In morning forecast updates, the low temperature value for tonight is moved to the next day icon box since the occurrence of the lowest night temperature typically occurs near day break.
  • In afternoon forecast updates, this low temperature adjustment is also applied to the third day of the forecast period.

New Graphics on Our Web Site

Users to our web site will notice significant graphic changes as our web site adopts new standards. This change represents the first phase of web improvements as we align the site with the new norms established for Government of Canada web sites. Further changes can be expected over the next several months as we address outstanding requirements in the new web standard.

As well, our site will adopt a new address "www.weatheroffice.gc.ca" with the introduction of the above changes. For most users, this will largely be transparent as we automatically redirect users to the changed page addresses.

Afternoon Forecast Updates Have an Additional Time Period

Our "afternoon" updates of public 5-day weather forecasts now include an additional time period for the second night (from 6 pm to 6 am). The format is similar to the first night and the length of time covered by the forecast remains unchanged in our web site (up to day 5).

Visually, the afternoon icon presentation of forecasts changes from 5 boxes of information to 6, thus eliminating the empty grey box in the afternoon and evening.

Standard Region Names

New standard forecast region names are being introduced to our web site. These are the names used to describe forecast areas in the "weather warning" section or "text forecast" section of our web site. This improvement is part of an effort by the Meteorological Service of Canada to synchronise the names in all our internal systems using region names for weather forecast areas.

Many of the region name changes are minor however the changes do include a small number of redefined region boundaries. This synchronised change of May 18 may create brief disruptions or delays in the delivery of weather forecast info to our web pages during the transition to the new names.
